Chapter 12

Kala was at the lead of twenty-four griffin-mounted giants flying into Altearin’s thick atmosphere. True to his duty, he’d called for the best men for the mission and mounted up once leaving Khuthon’s side. He knew this wasn’t something to waste any time on, for it was obvious Khuthon had a deep desire to see the matter done. Kala wouldn’t disappoint.

They had made use of the portal slightly farther away from the capital, allowing them to see the lay of the land en route. It also allowed others in the city to properly know of their arrival and have it look less like a precursor to some invasion and truer to the diplomatic nature of the mission. And in keeping with that mindset, they made sure to keep their flying measured and path direct. Slow and steady, with nothing to hide: the perfect example of peaceful intent.

Kala, like the rest with him, came from the first generation of giants that walked Tralodren. The others possessed fair skin and light eyes with brown or blond hair, contrasting Kala’s black locks. Each wore half-plate, carried a sword at their side, and had a shield emblazoned with the Steel Cross on their back. The last two of their party also carried black banners with a red Steel Cross clearly displayed for all to see. Another mark of their intentions and purpose made visible to all they met.

“Keep a tight formation,” he barked over the wind.

As the purple-hued clouds finally cleared, the giants drew closer to the bizarre sight that was the realm of the god of chaos and darkness. It was an overcast world quite in contrast to Kratos, which resembled Kala’s idea of a normal planet, much like the Tralodren he’d known before his death. He was careful to take note of all he could, being mindful as well to not look like a scouting party if he could help it. It was a delicate line he was called to walk in all this, but he knew he wouldn’t have been entrusted with the task if Khuthon didn’t think he could get it done. And it was that confidence that kept him focused, for he wanted to validate his god’s trust.

“Keep an eye out for the palace,” he ordered his men. “We should be getting close.”

“I don’t see any escorts,” said a giant on his left. “Do we just keep on to the palace?”

“For now,” said Kala. It wasn’t a normal practice to let strangers have free rein of your skies, but this wasn’t a normal place, and these weren’t normal times either. With Gurthghol missing, who knew what sort of disorder and disarray might be churning beneath them.

“Capital in sight, sir.” Another giant pointed at the massive walls and buildings seemingly rushing to greet them.

“Still no escort,” repeated the first giant who’d spoken.

“We head for the palace,” returned Kala. “No deviations.”

It was hard to miss Gurthghol’s palace. It rose in the midst of the capital like some great mountain. The
